1924 - James Matthew and Georgina are living at 59 Honeysuckle Street, Bendigo (Golden Square). They are listed in the Federal electorate of Bendigo, sub-district Golden Square. James is now retired.

Reported in the Maryborough "Advertiser":
Mr J M Laidler, formerly manager and editor of "The Advertiser" was a very surprised man on Friday night when a number of his friends and colleagues invaded his home in Russell Street for the purpose of making him a presentation. Included in the visitors were a number of the original members of the Rifle Club, of which Mr Laidler was a former captain. Mr J Blackburne, in maming some eulogistic inferences to Mr Laidler's work in Maryborough, instanced the high standard which "The Advertiser" had maintained under his control, and said that his efforts, both on and off the paper were largely responsible for the passing of the Forest Bill through Parliament. He (Mr Blackburne) was secretary of the Forest Protection League during the period referred to, and he was therefore fully cognisant of the work Mr Laidler had performed. As captain of the Rifle Club, he had brought that organisation to a high pitch of efficiency. The matches he had arranged had brought hundreds of people to Maryborough at different times, and by his efforts in connection with the club he had always kept Maryborough well to the front. Mr J Frayne mentioned a number of citizens whoe duties had prevented them from being present and stated that as soon as the matter of the presentation became known numbers of people expressed a desire to contribute, but they had been informed that it was being arranged as a mark of esteem by a few old friends. Messrs E Humphris, J N Gearing and T P Richards also spoke in connection with the presentation, the first named ramarking that he had known Mr Laidler ever since he came to Maryborough as he had met him on the night of his arrival. He had been a tower of strength in connection with charitable movements, and was one of the best workers in connection with the Hospital Ball. Mr Blackburne then handed Mr Laidler a valuable travelling rug, and, in accepting same, the recipient expressed the regret he felt at leaving Maryborough, after a residence of close on 40 years. Their kindness had greatly affected him, and he thanked them sincerley for their presnt, which he considered was a very appropriate gift. The company then joined in drinking the health of Mr and Mrs Laidler and the hope was expressed by all that Mr Laidler, who leaves for Bendigo next week, would be able to return to Maryborough in the near future, improved in health, and able to renew old acquaintances.

"A patient Sufferer at Rest"

Death of Former Editor of the 'âAdvertiser' - At his residence, 59 Honeysuckle Street, Bendigo, the death occurred on Thursday of Mr J M Laidler, who was for many years editor and manager of the Maryborough "Advertiser". The late Mr Laidler, who was 65 years of age, came to Maryborough over 40 years ago, and joined the literary staff of the "Standard". Later he changed over to the "Advertiser", with which paper he was associated until his retirement through ill health about eight years ago. The deceased was a well known figure in Maryborough and took a keen interest in the affairs of the hospital. He was also captain of the Rifle Club and president of the Charity Ball committee, - (of which Mrs Laidler was treasurer) - for many years. He was a capable journalist and had the reputation of being one of the finest mining reporters in the country, that tribute being paid by one of the large metropolitan dailies. The late Mr Laidler leaves a widow and adult family, one of his sons being killed in action during the war. The funeral will take place at Bendigo this morning.

Burial: Bendigo Public Cemetery, Section MON H6, Grave No 27974.
