1851 Census. Robert, wife Esther and children Ellen 9 yrs, Robert 2 yrs, Ann 5 yrs and Jane 3 yrs. Robert is 37 years old, therefore born c1814; Esther 31 yrs old therefore born c1821. Resident at Tate Hill, Whitby. Occupation Shipwright. Ref: HO107/2374/235, Page 22
Message at Curious Fox mentions Esther Leadley's parents as Robert Leadley and Esther Battensby.
1861 Census: Esther and children Ellen 18 yrs, Ann 15 yrs, Jane 12 yrs, Robert 10 yrs, Matthew 8 yrs, Esther 6 yrs, Elizabeth 3 yrs are still living at Tate Hill, Whitby. Esther is now a widow. Ref: RG9/3647/11, Page 16.
1881 Census: Esther is living in Henrietta Street, Whitby with son Matthew, aged 28 years. Matthew is a fisherman and Esther is described as a fisherman's widow aged 65 years. Ref: RG11/4833/16, Page 25.
1891 Census: Esther and nephew and niece Robert & Amelia Peart are living at Tate Hill, Whitby. Esther is 72 years old, an invalid. Robert is just 3 years old and Amelia is 16 years old and works as a domestic servant. Nest door are other members of the Peart family. Ref: RG12/3994/8, Page 9.

1901 Census: Matthew, wife Margaret and children Matthew, Margaret, Mary 16 yrs, Esther 15 yrs, Robert 14 yrs, George 12 yrs, Matthew 9 yrs are still living in Wilsons Yard, Church Street. Headstone inscription at Larpool Cemetery: 'To the dear memory of John, dearly loved son of Matthew and Margaret Leadley, who fell asleep Jun 18th 1894 aged 15 years. ... sleeping ... Also the above Margaret Leadley who died Dec 12th 1931 aged 79 years. Also the above Matthew Leadley who died Jan 18th 1933 aged 80 years. Also Esther Leadley granddaughter of the above who died Dec 20 1923 aged 2 years. 'Thy will be done.' Also Margaret Hall, their granddaughter died Feb 21st 1940 aged 29 years.'

1851 Census: Eliza Jane and daughter Ann are living in Church Street in Whitby. Eliza is listed as a mariner's wife; it's presumed that Matthew, her husband is at sea. Down the road, at Tate Hill, the other daughter of Matthew Leadley, Maria Leadley is with her grandfather, Robert Leadley - the widow of Eleanor Wilton. Ref: HO107/2374/239, Page 30.
1861 Census: Eliza is now a widow; she is living on the Cragg with daughter Ann, now 10 years old and she is a housekeeper. Ref: RG9/3648/71, Page 17.
