Ref: National Archives, Kew. Merchant Seaman's Register. Born 31st July 1829 at Whitby in Yorkshire. Capacity - sailor. Height 5' 6 1/4"; hair brown, complexion dark, eyes grey and marks - none. First went to sea as a boy in the year 1836. No service in the Royal Navy or Foreign Service. When unemployed, resides at Whitby. Ticket issued in Milford 26th September 1846. Could not write.
On his marriage certificate James stated he was born at Whitby in Yorkshire. The spelling of the name was 'LAIDLER'; his father was listed as James Laidler and his mother was Jane Duncan. However his death certificate stated he was born in Middlesborough. James LEADLER married Jane DONKIN in Whitby on 18th June 1827. James LEADLEY was christened at St Mary's Whitby, parents James Leadley and Jane in Whitby, 2nd Aug 1829.
No other siblings were found for James Leadley/Jane family in Whitby. However, a daughter, Elizabeth Laidler was born in Middlesbrough 25th Jul 1835. Another child, Francis/Frances Laidler was buried in MBro in 1828, aged 7 years. The child's father was James Laidler.
No record has been found to date of James' arrival in Australia. On his death certificate in 1898, it was stated that he had been in the colony for 50 years; that would place his arrival around 1848. He would have been about 18 or 19 years of age at that time. However an entry in the Electrol Rolls of Victoria James was listed as a resident of the Red Hill Diggings of Ballarat in 1856
On one of the death records for another family member, his name is given as James Duncan Laidler. This is the only occurrence of a middle name of Duncan; ie referring to his mother's maiden name of Donkin/Duncan.
At the time of his death, James Laidler was living at High St Bendigo. He is buried at Bendigo Cemetery, D6, Church of England section. A small gravestone was erected there in 2004.

AUSTRALIAN ELECTORAL ROLL: 1909 Bridget Laidler, Welsford Street, Shepparton, home duties.

Welsford Street ... lady who is the mother (of Mrs) Whitfield and Mrs Thomas, was an invalid for a (number of) years. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon ... being interred in the Shepparton Cemetery. Rev J W ... officiated at the grave ... Mr W F Bowen conducted the mortuary arrangements.
Buried Saturday 5th June 1915. Death Certificate: Reg No 6843
If Bridget was 71 years old at the time of her death in 1915, then she must have been born in 1844. However, this would have meant that she was only 15 years old when she married James Laidler in 1859. I am advocating that she was 81 year old when she died, this would have made her born in 1834 & the extra ten years would have concealed her trial & transportation; this would also have meant she was 25 when she married James Laidler in 1859.
