1851 Census: James, wife Margaret, children Robert, Elizabeth and Sarah are living in Darlington Place Hartlepool in Durham. With them is daughter Ann, now married to John Adamson. They have a daughter Margaret, aged 5 months. James is a seaman, as is son Robert. John Adamson is an engine driver. In this record, James Middleton was listed as born in Scarborough, c1794; John Adamson was born in Lumley, Durham c1827. Ref: HO107/2384/433, Page 17.

1861 Census: James, wife Margaret, daughter Sarah and grandson Robert, aged 15 months are still living in Darlington Place, Hartlepool. James is now a labourer in the iron shipyard. Their daughter Sarah is a house servant. Ref: RG9/3700/85, Page 11.

1871 Census: James and wife Margaret are living with their daughter Sarah who is now married to William Walker. Both families are living at 8 Robson Buildings in Hartlepool. James is listed again as seaman. Ref: RG10/4916/9, Page 12.
