1851 Census: James, wife Margaret, children Robert, Elizabeth and Sarah are living in Darlington Place Hartlepool in Durham. With them is daughter Ann, now married to John Adamson. They have a daughter Margaret, aged 5 months. James is a seaman, as is son Robert. John Adamson is an engine driver. James Middleton was born in Scarborough, c1794; John Adamson was born in Lumley, Durham c1827. Ref: HO107/2384/433, Page 17.

1871 Census: Sarah is now married to William Walker. Sarah's parents James and Margaret Middleton are living with them at 8 Robson Build. in Hartlepool. William is listed as a general labourer. James is listed again as seaman. Ref: RG10/4916/9, Page 12.

1881 Census: William, Sarah and family are living at 44 Robsons Buildings in Hartlepool, Durham. There have been a number of additions to the family. William is now a coaltrimmer (labourer). In this record, Robert Middleton, aged 21 is a lodger, rather than a son. Ref: RG11/4907/66, Page 12

1861 Census: Elizabeth Middleton, a mariner's wife, is living in Alfred Place in Hartlepool, Durham. With her is a cousin's child. A Robert Middleton, aged 15 months, born Hartlepool is with his grandparents James Middleton and Margaret in Darlington Place. This Elizabeth is probably the wife of Robert Middleton, son of James and Margaret. He is probably at sea during this census. Ref: RG9/3700/92, Page 25.

1871 Census: Elizabeth is living at 29 Alfred Street, Hartlepool. Her mother Hannah Cloke (Cloak), aged 76 is with her as well as a visitor Hannah Foses. In this record, Elizabeth's birthplace is given as Sunderland in Durham. Ref: RG10/4916/23, Page 40.
