Individual Note:
     The surnames LEADLEY, LEADLER and variations of LAIDLER are all prevalent in Whitby, Yorkshire. The name is LAIDLER in Middlesbrough and Durham, although some instances have been found of the name Leadley in Middlesbrough.

Birth Record: Whitby Parish Registers; born 4th March 1802, James, son of Robert and Ann, sailor, christened 10th March 1802, Whitby.

1841 Census: James is not recorded, but wife Jane (Donkin) and daughter Elizabeth are living in Durham Street, next to East Street, Middlesbrough.

1851 Census: James, Jane and daughter Elizabeth are living in Durham Street, Middlesbrough. James' occupation is listed as sailor; daughter Elizabeth, aged 15, is a dressmaker. A number of sailors, seamen and shipwright's families are living in the same street. Ref: HO 107/2383/270, Page 34
   
In the ancestry.com site, it was difficult to search for this entry as there were a number of errors in the database:
* the surname was Lindler instead of Laidler
* Whilby instead of Whitby

1861 Census: James and Jane are still living in Middlesbrough, in Chapman Yard. It was difficult to use the search facility at ancestry.com to locate this entry as the surname is spelled Saidler, instead of Laidler, and Robin Hoods Bay was written Bobion Hoodbay. James' occupation is listed as sailor, on leave. With them on the night of the census is their grandson, James Miller, aged 2.

Next door to James and Jane is their daughter, Elizabeth, now married to George Miller, with two other children, John and George. Husband George Miller is also a sailor, on leave. Ref: RG9/3687/19, Page 45

1871 Census: James and Jane are still living in Middlesbrough, in Garden Street. James' occupation is still listed as sailor. It was difficult to locate this entry via the search facility at ancestry.com because the surname is spelled Laldtor, instead of Laidler. Robin Hoods Bay is spelled Robenlbogdo Balf. Death Record: James Laidler, Mar Qtr 1878; aged 75, Stockton, Volume 10a, Page 23

Burial Record: James Laidler, buried 4th Jan 1878, aged 76, Middlesbrough New Linthorpe Cemetery, Yorkshire North Riding, Grave 1612a in consecrated ground. Rev E J Hack. Death occurred at Stockton Union Workhouse, the body was removed from Stockton to Middlesborough.

Ref: National Archives, Kew, Microfilm Merchant Seaman's Register. James Laidler, born 31st July 1829 at Whitby in Yorkshire. Capacity - sailor. Description: 5'6 1/4" tall; hair brown, complexion dark, eyes grey and marks - none. First went to sea as a boy in the year 1836. No service in the Royal Navy or Foreign Service. When unemployed, resides at Whitby. Ticket issued in Milford 26th September 1846. Could not write.

New Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough. James Laidler is buried in Plot No 1612 - this is the second row back from the road. In the front row, there are three headstones; inscriptions as follows:

Plot No 1658: 'In loving memory of Margaret, the beloved wife of Robert Magnay, who died October 18th 1885, aged 55 years. Also of John Henderson, brother of the above, who died February 9th 1862, aged 40 years. Interred in the old cemetery. Also of Elizabeth, daughter of the above Robert and Margaret Magney and wife of George Hebron who died October 29th 1887, aged 27 years.'

Plot No 1659: 'In affectionate remembrance of Minnie, the beloved daughter of John and Ursula Davis of Middlesbrough who died June 24th 1880 aged 4 years and 4 months. 'She is gone they say of our gentle child; With heart so loving and looks so mild; Not gone from memory, not gone from love; But gone to our father's home above.''

Plot No 1660: 'In affectionate remembrance of Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Captain J Walker, Borough Hotel Middlesbrough, who died in London 15th Nov 1879, aged 19 years and 11 months.'
